ROBERT AND MARIE BUCHAN

FOUNDERS OF THE BUCHAN FAMILY FOUNDATION

Robert Buchan, a prominent Scottish Canadian mining engineer, businessman, and philanthropist, has significantly impacted the mining industry and academia. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Robert was influenced by his family’s maritime roots. His parents, originally from the Peterhead fishing industry, moved to Rosyth in Fife, where his family became involved in the naval dockyard.

His grandfather, a pilot on the Firth of Forth, who safely navigated ships up the estuary, further inspired Robert’s appreciation for engineering.

He attended Dunfermline High School and pursued higher education at Heriot-Watt University, where he graduated with a first-class honors degree in Mining Engineering in 1969. Robert continued his studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, earning a Master of Science degree in Mining Engineering in 1972. In 1993, Robert founded Kinross Gold, a company that has grown into the third-largest gold mining company in North America. After retiring as president and CEO of Kinross Gold in January 2005, he founded Katanga Copper, which developed one of the world’s largest copper deposits. He retired from Katanga Copper in 2007 but continued to influence the mining industry as the executive chairman and director of Allied Nevada Gold Corp., operating the Hycroft mine and holding numerous exploration claims in Nevada.

His philanthropic efforts are as significant as his professional achievements. In 2009, he made one of the largest gifts ever to Queen’s University and the largest single gift to mining in Canada: $10 million. This funding supported students, faculty, and programming, and in gratitude, the Board of Trustees renamed the department the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining. In 2010, he donated £1.3 million to Heriot-Watt University to fund sustainable energy engineering projects, the largest individual donation the university had ever received. Additionally, he contributed £650,000 to establish the Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre at Carnegie College in Fife.

Beyond his professional and philanthropic endeavors, Robert served on various boards, including Polyus Gold International, a Russian mining conglomerate. Elected to the board in June 2008, he became chairman in July 2011 and stepped down in 2013. Heriot-Watt University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2011 for his contributions to the field. As the Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University, he remains actively involved in academia while enjoying the warm climate of the Coachella Valley with his wife, Marie. Known as ‘Snowbirds,’ they escape the harsh Toronto winters for the rejuvenating sunshine.

Bob Buchan’s legacy in the mining industry and his dedication to education and philanthropy make him one of the most influential figures in history. His commitment to sharing business insights and lessons continues to inspire future generations of engineers and entrepreneurs. Robert and Marie’s philanthropic efforts continue to support educational institutions and sustainable energy projects.

COPERNICUS LODGE

SENIOR HOME

Since its inception in 1979, Copernicus Lodge has stood as a cherished haven for Polish seniors in Toronto’s vibrant Roncesvalles Village. Founded under the vision of Father Michael Smith, OMI, alongside a dedicated board of 30 directors, its mission has steadfastly centered on meeting the holistic needs of elderly Polish individuals—caring for their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being within an environment deeply rooted in their culture, heritage, Roman Catholic faith, and traditions.

The Lodge’s origins trace back to a crucial need within Toronto’s Polish diaspora community, particularly among those who had endured significant hardships such as wartime service or Siberian exile during the tumultuous mid-20th century. These founding members sought to create not just a residence, but a home where seniors could find comfort, familiarity, and a continuation of their cultural identity.

Over the past 45 years, Copernicus Lodge has evolved into a cornerstone institution, expanding its capacity to serve more than 400 seniors through a blend of independent living apartments and a comprehensive long-term care facility. This growth reflects not only the increasing demand for specialized care tailored to the Polish community’s unique needs but also the unwavering dedication of its staff and volunteers.

As a nonprofit organization, Copernicus Lodge relies not only on essential government funding but also on the enduring generosity of the Polish-Canadian community. Through a variety of fundraising initiatives, including charitable donations and community events, this support network ensures that the Lodge can continue to enhance its programs and facilities, providing the highest standards of care and quality of life for its residents.

In 2024, Copernicus Lodge celebrated a significant milestone—its 45th anniversary—with a memorable series of events that underscored its deep community ties and enduring legacy. The highlight of this celebratory year was the Galaxy Ball, organized by the Copernicus Lodge Foundation, which brought together over 300 guests for an elegant gala evening. This event not only honored the Lodge’s rich history but also raised vital funds to support its ongoing mission.

Additionally, the revival of the Father Michael Smith Annual Golf Tournament added a sporting dimension to the anniversary celebrations, offering participants and sponsors alike an opportunity to contribute to a cause dear to their hearts. This tournament not only fostered community spirit but also highlighted the Lodge’s commitment to engaging with supporters on multiple levels. Beyond these formal gatherings, Copernicus Lodge remains an integral part of the annual Roncesvalles Polish Festival, where it proudly showcases its culinary heritage at the Food & Beverage Garden. Here, attendees can savor traditional Polish delicacies such as pierogies and sausages, prepared with care and served with warmth—a testament to the Lodge’s ongoing connection with both its cultural roots and the broader Toronto community.

Looking forward, Copernicus Lodge continues to adapt and innovate, guided by its founding principles of compassion, respect, and cultural preservation. As Toronto’s demographics shift and the needs of aging populations evolve, the Lodge remains committed to providing exemplary care that not only meets but exceeds expectations. Its ongoing success hinges not only on financial support but also on the enduring spirit of volunteerism and community engagement that defines its identity.

In conclusion, Copernicus Lodge stands as a beacon of hope and belonging for generations of Polish seniors, embodying the spirit of community and cultural heritage. From its humble beginnings to its current stature as a leading provider of senior care in Toronto, the Lodge’s journey is a testament to the power of vision, perseverance, and community solidarity. As it looks ahead to the future, Copernicus Lodge remains dedicated to its mission—to provide a true “place to call home” where Polish seniors can live with dignity, surrounded by the comforts of familiarity and the embrace of their cultural heritage. Copernicus Lodge continues to inspire through its commitment to excellence and its unwavering support from the community, ensuring that its residents receive not only essential care but also a nurturing environment that honors their life experiences and traditions.

MAREK KRAMARSKI AND JACEK ŻYRKOWSKI

PRIORY OF THE ORDER OF ST. STANISLAS

The Małopolska Priory of the Order of St. Stanislaus stands as a leading branch of the Polish Association of the Order of St. Stanislaus, an organization deeply rooted in history and tradition.

Established in June 1999 and officially registered in the National Court Register in 2009 under KRS number 0000333589, the Priory has grown into the oldest and largest organization of Knights and Dames of the Order in Poland.

The Association was created with the approval of Juliusz Nowina-Sokolnicki VIII, Grand Master of the Order and President of the Polish Government-in-Exile, who reinstated the Order of St. Stanislaus in 1979. Since 2020, the Association proudly holds the European Union Patent No. 018170473 for the Order, further solidifying its status and legacy.

The origins of the Małopolska Priory trace back to the Kraków Commandery of the Order of St. Stanislaus, established in December 1997. Initially led by Knight Marek Sosenko GCStS, the Priory was later overseen by Knight Bohdan Mielowski GCStS, who served as Prior until his retirement in 2004. Since then, Knight Jacek Żyrkowski has held the position of Prior. Jacek, a graduate in Electronics, Organization and Management, and Renewable Resources and Energy Sources from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, has a diverse educational background. He also completed studies in Tourism Organization and Economics at the Kraków University of Economics. Professionally, he contributed significantly to the Diocesan Management of the Catholic Action in the Archdiocese of Kraków for a decade, established housing cooperatives, and played a crucial role in providing housing for young residents of orphanages. Additionally, as a teacher in Kraków’s Electronic and Tourism Technical Schools, he facilitated internships in Italy for students under the ERASMUS+ program.

In 2009, Knight Marek Kramarski GCCStS, from a distinguished Kraków family, became the Deputy Prior of Małopolska. Marek’s entrepreneurial spirit emerged during his school years under socialism, where he utilized his chemical education to open a craft workshop producing frames for sunglasses and corrective glasses. Alongside this, he managed authorized dealerships for several car and motorcycle brands. Since 2000, Marek has operated a Medical Products Consulting Firm and has been deeply involved in charitable activities. His efforts include fundraising for flood victims, organizing collections for chronically ill patients at the St. Lazarus Hospice in Kraków, and providing meals for the homeless and residents of St. Albert’s Home. He has long supported disabled children at the Special Educational and Care Center No. 4 in Kraków, funding rehabilitation trips and Christmas packages for hospices.

The Priory’s ceremonial Investitures are held in the historic Basilica of the Paulite Fathers at Skałka in Kraków, a site deeply connected to the martyrdom of St. Stanislaus. The Małopolska Priory also organizes an annual procession with relics from Wawel to Skałka, culminating in a mass celebrated with the participation of the Polish Episcopate. This event honors the memory of the Order of St. Stanislaus, which was established by King Stanisław Augustus Poniatowski on May 7, 1765, and remains one of Poland’s oldest orders. The Order’s motto, “PREMIANDO INCITAT,” meaning “By Rewarding, You Encourage,” reflects its original purpose: to reward social merits for the king and the Commonwealth, and to unite the awarded individuals in actions that uphold the principles for which St. Stanislaus, Patron of Poland and the Order, suffered martyrdom.

The Knights of the Order were historically obligated to support the king’s charitable activities, particularly through contributions to the poor and the Infant Jesus Hospital in Warsaw, which provided aid not only to the sick but also to the elderly, the poor, the disabled, and veterans. The Małopolska Priory of the Order of St. Stanislaus continues these noble traditions, upholding the values of charity and service that have defined the Order for centuries, and remains proud of its ongoing contributions to the community and its charitable achievements.

AGNIESZKA SZEWCZYK

FOUNDER OF KEDARIX – PIONEER IN TECHNICAL SEALING SOLUTIONS

Agnieszka Szewczyk, the dynamic president of Kedarix Technical Sealing Production Centre, has led the company to remarkable heights over the past two decades. Since assuming leadership in 2002, she has transformed Kedarix from a fledgling business with just one client into a market leader boasting over 1,000 clients today.

Under Agnieszka’s visionary leadership, Kedarix has consistently pioneered new products and technologies, solidifying its position at the forefront of the industry. Her commitment to excellence is reflected in the company’s adoption of the ISO 9001-2015 TUV Nord quality management system, significantly enhancing product quality and customer satisfaction. Agnieszka has not only advanced Kedarix’s technical capabilities but has also built a strong personal brand as a formidable woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Her journey is a testament to resilience, innovation, and unwavering dedication.

To stay ahead in a competitive market, Agnieszka continually enhances her qualifications. She recently completed postgraduate MBA studies under Dr. Mateusz Grzesiak in Warsaw, alongside training in business psychology. These educational pursuits have enriched the company’s strategic direction and infused it with essential soft skills, improving human resource management and organizational culture. Between 2004 and 2013, Agnieszka expanded her technical expertise by undergoing specialized training at the Association of Polish Mechanical Engineers and Technicians (SIMP), focusing on the selection and operation of seals. This technical proficiency, combined with her business acumen, has driven Kedarix’s sustained growth and innovation.

Her commitment to innovation extends beyond national borders. She regularly attends international trade fairs, gathering insights and ideas that she adeptly implements at Kedarix. This global outlook ensures that the company remains a step ahead of the competition.

Agnieszka’s dedication to continuous improvement is evident in her personal development endeavors as well. In 2020, she completed courses in meditation and spirituality with Dr. Iliana Ramirez, which have contributed to her holistic approach to leadership. Her achievements have been widely recognized: in 2021, she received the Business Woman Award in the National Certification plebiscite, and in 2022, she was honored with the Personality of the Year Certificate and nominated for the Made in Poland 2022 award by the Polish Agency for Entrepreneurship.

The global economic challenges posed by the pandemic and inflation have prompted Agnieszka to reevaluate and adapt Kedarix’s operational strategies. Embracing the digital era, she has led the company in transitioning from traditional business methods to the realm of web development, ensuring Kedarix’s continued relevance and growth in the modern market. Agnieszka attributes receiving the Polish Quality Award to the dedicated efforts of the entire Kedarix team, both internal staff and external partners, spanning over twenty years. She emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering optimal solutions for diverse client challenges, ensuring long-term satisfaction and trust. Agnieszka expressed profound gratitude to their customers for their ongoing collaboration, which fuels Kedarix’s growth and prepares them to tackle new challenges ahead.

The success at the 3rd Made in Poland Congress in Berlin in June 2022 helped Kedarix gain a foothold in the German market. Although Kedarix has been a player in the Polish technical sealing market for over 20 years, the last four years have been pivotal for its growth. Paradoxically, the challenges posed by the pandemic have spurred the company’s most significant advancements. As Agnieszka noted, this period required a fresh perspective, increased visibility for the brand, and proactive engagement on a global scale.

Kedarix specializes in supplying technical seals to industrial facilities, focusing on continuous production enhancement. Key technologies include Seal-Jet for efficient, precise, and rapid production without traditional molds, ideal for custom orders like piston seals and rotary seals. Injection molding shapes plastics quickly and cost-effectively using heated material in prepared molds. They also produce molded products from materials such as nitrile rubber, neoprene, silicone, and EPDM, varying in elasticity, hardness, and chemical resistance. Kedarix integrates rubber with metals or plastics to produce a range of components, all meeting ISO standards for quality assurance. Over 90% of Kedarix’s products are made in-house using advanced machinery, ensuring consistent supply. Their production capabilities include rapid order fulfillment within 24 hours, customization of seals, and replication based on customer samples. They maintain a diverse global inventory of sealing products, with access to over a million items stored at their Wola Zabierzowska facility. This inventory has grown steadily over Kedarix’s 20-year history.

Agnieszka Szewczyk’s leadership of Kedarix exemplifies a fusion of technical expertise, strategic foresight, and commitment to quality. Her ability to navigate challenges, embrace innovation, and foster global growth underscores Kedarix’s position as an industry leader. As Kedarix continues to expand its technological capabilities and international presence, guided by Agnieszka’s vision, the future holds promise for further achievements and contributions to the industrial sealing sector on a global scale.
